Description:
This is one of the much older buildings in Pune, where the coppersmiths (Tambats) still live and work. It is called Tambat Ali. The tree is growing out of the steps. Sorry I am late I am late, you won't believe what happened.....I lost my way, the steps were too narrow, jackal ate my hat, the bus stop turned out to be a train station only the trains were all going the other way.... well all that and much more so here it is late but here it is.

Thanks Frewin, you made me think about this. This building is not a ruin it is in fact built in the 20th century. People still live in it as can be seen by the cycle and the clothes line. In a country like India with a 5000 year old civilisation a structure has to be really old to be called ancient. Though a building over a century old is included in the heritage buildings. This part of Pune has many old buildings and narrow streets where the old city still exists and as such is possibly a heritage site. Urban decay according to me signifies both roads, walls and structures which are going to seed and are just not in their original pristine form. These could be anything from a couple of years to a hundred years or more. If a structure is both declared a heritage site and is under the archaeological survey of India then i guess in India at least it can be classed as ancient.

This makes one question the concept of urban decay - what is simply ancient and what is decay. I love the tree root accomodating itself to the man made steps - for now...
