Stopping for a break and a photo for Monday Magazine, we dispaly our finest working attire. Benches are still to be painted with a milk paint (lime putty and casien) and the floor needs two more coats of linseed oil before a wax. Rocks in the bench are sealed and finished with linseed oil too. ...http://flickr.com/photos/eco-sense/2335970463/
European farmers once painted their barns with a mixture of linseed oil, milk, lime & ferrous oxide (rust). The ferrous oxide gave the red hues & prevent fungi & moss from growing, which can breakdown wood.

This is a lime paint finish that I did on walls in a home with a French Country design. The lime paint has a subtle "bloom" that occurs as it dries. It's a very natural looking finish.

We had done three coats of lime wash in our dome. Probably due to the
prickly pear cactus juice we had some areas that were off color. We
decided to go with a more energy intensive homebrew paint and use
white portland cement, lime, and water. We ended up using.
- 6 lbs of lime
-10 lbs of white portland cement - 2 gallons of water
This gave us a very strong smooth bright white finish that felt a bit
like a swimming pool. We plan on using a similar recipe on the rest
of our domes both internal and external.

Rangoli (ran-goal-i, also known as Alpana, Kolam and by other names) is a traditional art of decorating courtyards and walls of Indian houses, places of worship and sometimes eating places as well. The powder of white stone, lime, rice flour and other cheap paste is used to draw intricate and ritual designs. Each state of India has its own way of painting Rangoli.
One characteristic of Rangoli is that it is painted by commoners. On some special occasions it is painted in every home, with or without formal training in Rangoli art. The art is typically transferred from generation to generation and from friend to friend. Popular magazines publish new designs of Rangoli every week and on special occasions there are Rangoli contests.
Women use their bare fingers or a brush to create various designs from sandstone powder or grain-flour. Sometimes colors and petals are used in addition to flour paste. Some women are so skilled with their fingers that they can create figures of deities, chariots, temples, etc., on the finely layered floor. Petals of various flowers, such as oleanders, cosmos, zenia, chrysanthemums, and green leaves provide the artist the ability ......http://flickr.com/photos/santu/110379168/

lime ... putty... quicklime ... slaking preservation mortar plaster green building.....
Lime is one of the most ecologically friendly masonry materials in the world. It has been used in constructing sustainable buildings for over 6,000 years. It is a vapor permeable material which allows moisture to pass through the walls, allowing walls to breathe. When the breathability of walls is compromised, such issues as mold, mildew, and "unhealthy building syndrome," can become prevalent.
Lime also absorbs carbon dioxide from the air. Much of the carbon dioxide that is released during the production of lime is reabsorbed during the carbonation of lime mortars. This is compared to minimal CO2 absorption in other masonry binders.
Also, the amount of energy used in lime production is close to 75% less than that of cement production. Old lime mortar can also be recycled to be used as fertilizer, to adjust pH levels in water, as well as a variety of other healthy and green uses.
One of the most ecologically friendly options in building is to use the structures that we already have (see Historic Preservation). By restoring and using a structure that was previously built, the amount of energy and materials needed to fix what is existing is markedly less than that of constructing a whole new structure. The adaptive re-use of buildings is often a community friendly and ecologically friendly manner of construction.
