There is a big problem with cars that get 100mpg.The problem is NOT the car, nor is it how much money you think you will save driving a car that gets you from California to Flordia on one gallon of gas.

The problem is gas companies.

$4.00 per gallon @ 30mpg = Expensive.$12.00 per gallon @ 90mpg = Just as expensive.

Guess what oil companies will do when everyone is getting 90mpg instead of 30mpg? They will raise the prices of gas by 300%. Oil companies are greedy, and they will NOT let some little company like Ford or Honda put them out of business.

As every new line of Fuel Efficient cars come out, gas prices rise and will continue to rise.

Oil companies are the problem, not how much gas you use.....http://www.whynot.net/ideas/3857

electro magnet motor...http://youtube.com/watch?v=fDUtcftqPMM&feature=related

I've suggested a couple of ideas along these lines-

1.) "Hybrid replacement transmission," essentially replace the automatic transmission in a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive full-size automobile with a motor/generator, and install batteries in normally "unused" places in the car, such as under seats and in the front part of the trunk (boot). At speeds under 20 mph the electric motor propels the car, over 20 mph the original ICE takes over. This would be an aftermarket replacement "kit" for a used car.

2.) Hybrid conversion for front-wheel-drive car- replace the rear "beam" axle with an independant rear suspension and differential and half-shafts to propel the rear wheels, powered by an electric motor; again, batteries are installed wherever there is unused space.

I have two front-wheel-drive vehicles in my driveway, I may attempt this conversion on one of them (or both, if it's successful). Both vehicles are paid for, and conversion for both should cost far less than the $25,000 price for a Prius.

Hybrids are always going to be more expensive than pure ICE or electric vehicles, because they have to incorporate dual drive systems, even if they share a powertrain. Maybe the least expensive development would be to "hybridize" an electric car, by installing an ICE-powered generator (series hybrid), rather than adapting an ICE car (parallel or series-parallel).

Beaugrand, Jan 07 2008
I think it might be interesting to make a 'hybrid' that only has an electric powertrain, but has an independant gas engine dedicated to charging. That way, you don't have to worry about two sets of half-shafts or transmissions and the gas engine could be as simple as a 12-horse riding lawnmower engine directly coupled to the alternator. I think this charging set-up could be had for less than $600usd

You'd normally use the car as a plug-in electric and only use the gas engine on longer trips. And it need not be powerful enough to provide constant electrical power--if you need to go a longer distance, you'd start the generator engine before you've used much of your electric power and as you drove you'd let the electric deplete. Then when you got to work or stopped for lunch on your trip, you'd leave the generator running in the parking lot until it was full-charge again.

You'd simply allow some additional time and this way the electric car could have the range you need--which I guess is the primary argument now against them. Also, you could use this in conjunction with the vertical wind turbine that deploys in the parking lot, and the skin covered with photovoltaic cells.

But now my car is getting complex again, that that's the problem I want to solve. .....http://www.whynot.net/ideas/4185

THE TOYOTA HYBRIDS ARE IN THE RANGE OF 20 -25000 USD.WHAT ABOUT A POORMAN'S HYBRID? A HYBRID IN THE SUB 5000 DOLLARRANGE. YOU CAN DO AWAY WITH THE AUTOMATIC POWER TRAIN EXCHANGE.A SIMPLE MANUAL POWER TRAIN EXCHANGE - A SIMPLE DRIVE SHAFT IN THE FRONT WHICH IS PETROL/DIESEL DRIVEN AND A ELECTRIC MOTORDRIVEN REAR WHEELS WHICH CAN BE MANUALLY SWITCHED...http://www.whynot.net/ideas/4185
it's amazing how many people don't know that an electric motor is just magnets attracting and repelling in a circle...They're called "hubmotors."

They aren't used much in motor vehicles because they add a lot of unsprung weight, which is a bad thing.

Better to have the electric motor securely mounted to the chassis, driving the wheel through a conventional drivetrain. . think I understand what you are describing. Some sort of way to propel the two front or rear wheels electromagnatically while at the same time recharging the battery and running the electronics using whichever wheels are remaining to do so. I have been tinking of this sort of an idea all weekend long and wish I knew enough about it to test it. And you are right, you would not need brakes for the same principle behind moving the wheels would apply to stopping it. Just in the opposite direction. And you wouldn't need a constant flow of electricity, just a small amount at intervals. Nor would you need a gas engine.

Magnetic fields, STORE energy, they don't create it. Thus, you cannot exploit the work done by a magnetic picking things up, because, somewhere during the process, YOU have to supply the energy that gets stored in the magnetic field that allows the work to be done. For example, YOU must either move the object or the magnet close enough for them to stick together, but in doing that moving, you are supplying the energy that will be used to do the work to move the two things together. ....http://youtube.com/watch?v=fA9BaKh--9c&feature=related

Hook a generator to a windmill, and what do you get? Free energy, it does NOT cost anything. Hook an ungrounded antenna to a voltmeter, and you get free energy. Put 3 motors side by side, while using a battery or other source to power the motor in the middle. What do you get? http://www.free-energy-info.co.uk/....The purpose of this web site is to provide you with an introduction to a series of devices which have been shown to have very interesting properties and some are (incorrectly) described as 'perpetual motion' machines.
What's that you say - perpetual motion is impossible? My, you're a difficult one to please. The electrons in the molecules of rock formations have been orbiting steadily for millions of years without stopping - at what point will you agree that they are in perpetual motion?

So, why don't electrons run out of energy and just slow down to a standstill? Quantum Mechanics has shown that the universe is a seething cauldron of energy with particles popping into existence and then dropping out again. Knowing that E = mC2, we can see that a tremendous amount of energy is needed to create any form of matter. Scientists remark that if we could tap even a small part of that energy, then we would have free energy for our lifetime.://www.free-energy-info.co.uk

http://youtube.com/watch?v=pvLuQOKOVXQ
This great versatility has led to an unfortunate situation, however. When a generator produces electricity, it acts as a pump. For example light bulbs, batteries, and household appliances always have at least two prongs, or contacts. This allows electricity to both enter and exit the device, in order to flow through it and perform work. Like a flow of water, electricity is being recirculated in an endless loop, through a closed circuit. The electric current eventually flows back into the generator for recirculation......http://www.zpenergy.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1956

Introduction...
Conclusion
The thermoelectric effect is a phenomenon that connects heat and electricity. The thermoelectric
effects such as the Seebeck effect and the Peltier effect have lead to the generation of power and
refrigeration. However due to the quality of thermoelectric materials present this phenomena has
not been applied to its full potential. Attempt to determine an upper limit on the figure of merit,
both theoretically and experimentally, have yielded inconclusive results [7]. Thus, the search
continues to find the ideal thermoelectric materials or to determine if one can really exist..
The thermoelectric effect describes the relationship between electrical energy and thermal
energy. Two important and related processes of the thermoelectric effect are the Seebeck effect,
discovered in 1821, and the Peltier effect, discovered in 1834. Both effects were named after
their respective discoverers. Theses effects are made quantitative by the Seebeck and Peltier
coefficients that are related by the Kelvin relation. The degree to which a material displays the
thermoelectric effect is described quantitatively by the figure of merit. Studies have suggested
that one family of compounds called filled-skutterudites have the potential to serve as good
thermoelectric materials. Two main applications of these materials are in power generation and
refrigeration.....[1]. Although thermoelectric
refrigerators are possible, that does not
mean they are commercially viable.
Thermoelectric materials at the
moment have ZT values that are not as
high as the equivalent ZT value of 3 of
the usual refrigerator devices utilizing
the vapor compression principal....http://physics.ucsd.edu/students/courses/winter2007/physics152a/thermo.pdf

Package of 3 Thermoelectric Cooler (T couple) Peltier Effect Devices

An ideal application for one of these would be to heat/cool your coffee/Iced tea on the way to work or on the boat/RV. Run it on 12 Volts from the lighter socket.
By flipping the thing over after heatsinking each side you have a drink heater/cooler. There are hundreds of applications for this low power consumption cutie. Note Peltier devices can be stacked in ascending/descending cascaded arrays, the theoretical limit is one end goes supernova as the other reaches absolute cold. These are guaranteed to have little or no effect on the Martian climate. A safety temperature sensor is included at this price. The specs's are: size:34x31x3.3mm, deltaTmax=79deg C, Qmax=38.7Watts, Imax 3.9A, Vmax=16.1V, Thot= 50deg. These are made by Tellurex under their p/n CZ1-1.0-127-1.27 Large quantity available.

We also have a heat sink and fan assembly which may be used in combination with a Peltier device to cool the hot side of these devices. However, the trend in recent years has been for larger and larger thermoelectric systems. As power supplies become less expensive this has driven the cost of a complete thermoelectric system (cooler, power supply, and temperature controller) lower, so higher power systems are now more marketable. Systems with capacities in the 200-400 watt range are becoming more common, although they are still not nearly as common as smaller systems where the cooling capacity is below 100 watts. ....http://www.tetech.com/FAQ-Technical-Information.html

Here's what happens when you run a decently powerful Peltier with an excellent cooler on its hot side and an inert lump of metal - my heater without its power connected - on the cold side. 25°C below zero, and that's only from the 12 volt rail of a plain PC PSU. All hail the Peltier......http://www.dansdata.com/peltprac.htm

It may look impressive, but going well sub-zero like this isn't actually a good thing, unless you've got truly outrageous cooling power and can keep the thing that cold.

Peltier modules
There used a so called thermoelectric refrigerator based on Peltier effect. The given effect was called after a french watchmaker (1785-1845.), who discovered it in 1834.

If you put a drop of water in the hollow on the joint of 2 semiconductors Sb and Bi, and switch on the current, the drop would Freeze (with the reverse direction of the current the drop would Melt ). This is how Peltier effect works.....http://www.digit-life.com/articles/peltiercoolers/

Thermoelectric effects stem from a coupling between thermal and magnetic properties.

Three effects are distiguished: Seebeck, Peltier and Thomson. Only Seebeck and Peltier effects are considered here.

Apparatus

Acquiring and Preparing a Thermoelectric Module

A thermoelectric cooling module can be obtained by purchasing and disassembling a portable food cooler, (e.g., Coleman or Igloo brands). These are available at many department stores. If several model sizes are available, buy the least expensive: all contain thermoelectric modules that are suitable for demonstration purposes. Portable food coolers can be bought for less than $90. These will probably include the cooler and a power cord, fitted with a cigarette lighter adapter for 12-V automotive use. For classroom demonstrations a power supply will be needed; these can usually be purchased at the same place as the portable food cooler for about $30.

Disassembling an Igloo KoolMate series Kool Rider 6-quart Thermoelectric Roadster reveals that the cooling system is entirely contained in the cooler lid. A number of screws have to be removed to access the thermoelectric module. The module comes equipped with finned aluminum heat sinks attached to both sides; one of these has to be detached in order to remove the module from the lid. The heat sink is then reattached to the module, as shown in Figure 1......http://jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/Journal/Issues/1996/Oct/abs940.html

Conventional cooling systems such as those used in refrigerators utilize a compressor and a working fluid to transfer heat. exact definition..Thermoelectric coolers are solid state heat pumps that operate on the Peltier effect, the theory ...

what does this mean?

It could mean refrigeration without pumps and chemicals, and battery-powered "cold packs" able to maintain a given temperature for as long as the power held out (very useful for transporting sensitive medical supplies). It could mean high-end microchips able to operate at full speed with power-consuming fans replaced by heat-ferrying materials. It could mean very precise control over temperature for lab equipment and sensor technology.

http://www.thermoelectric.com/2005/pr/tem/pe.htm ...thermo tech...In a conventional refrigeration system, the main working parts are the evaporator, condenser, and compressor.
The evaporator surface is where the liquid refrigerant boils, changes to vapor, and absorbs heat energy. The compressor circulates the refrigerant and applies enough pressure to increase the temperature of the refrigerant above ambient level. The condenser helps discharge the absorbed heat into surrounding room air.

absolutely awesome...In a mechanical refrigeration unit, a compressor raises the pressure of a liquid and circulates the refrigerant through the system. In the evaporator or "freezer" area the refrigerant boils and, in the process of changing to a vapor, the refrigerant absorbs heat causing the freezer to become cold. The heat absorbed in the freezer area is moved to the condenser where it is transferred to the environment from the condensing refrigerant. In a thermoelectric cooling system, a doped semiconductor material essentially takes the place of the liquid refrigerant, the condenser is replaced by a finned heat sink, and the compressor is replaced by a DC power source. The application of DC power to the thermoelectric module causes electrons to move through the semiconductor material. At the cold end (or "freezer side") of the semiconductor material, heat is absorbed by the electron movement, moved through the material, and expelled at the hot end. Since the hot end of the material is physically attached to a heat sink, the heat is passed from the material to the heat sink and then, in turn, transferred to the environment.

1.3 The physical principles upon which modern thermoelectric coolers are based actually date back to the early 1800's, although commercial TE modules were not available until almost 1960. The first important discovery relating to thermoelectricity occurred in 1821 when a German scientist, Thomas Seebeck, found that an electric current would flow continuously in a closed circuit made up of two dissimilar metals provided that the junctions of the metals were maintained at two different temperatures. Seebeck did not actually comprehend the scientific basis for his discovery, however, and falsely assumed that flowing heat produced the same effect as flowing electric current. In 1834, a French watchmaker and part time physicist, Jean Peltier, while investigating the "Seebeck Effect," found that there was an opposite phenomenon whereby thermal energy could be absorbed at one dissimilar metal junction and discharged at the other junction when an electric current flowed within the closed circuit. Twenty years later, William Thomson (eventually known as Lord Kelvin) issued a comprehensive explanation of the Seebeck and Peltier Effects and described their interrelationship. At the time, however, these phenomena were still considered to be mere laboratory curiosities and were without practical application.

In the 1930's Russian scientists began studying some of the earlier thermoelectric work in an effort to construct power generators for use at remote locations throughout the country. This Russian interest in thermoelectricity eventually caught the attention of the rest of the world and inspired the development of practical thermoelectric modules. Today's thermoelectric coolers make use of modern semiconductor technology whereby doped semiconductor material takes the place of dissimilar metals used in early thermoelectric experiments.

1.4 The Seebeck, Peltier, and Thomson Effects, together with several other phenomena, form the basis of functional thermoelectric modules. Without going into too much detail, we will examine some of these fundamental thermoelectric effects.

1.4.1 SEEBECK EFFECT: To illustrate the Seebeck Effect let us look at a simple thermocouple circuit as shown in Figure (1.1). The thermocouple conductors are two dissimilar metals denoted as Material x and Material y.
1.4.2 PELTIER EFFECT: If we modify our thermocouple circuit to obtain the configuration shown in Figure (1.2), it will be possible to observe an opposite phenomenon known as the Peltier Effect.

If a voltage (Vin) is applied to terminals Tl and T2 an electrical current (I) will flow in the circuit. As a result of the current flow, a slight cooling effect (Qc) will occur at thermocouple junction A where heat is absorbed and a heating effect (Qh) will occur at junction B where heat is expelled. Note that this effect may be reversed whereby a change in the direction of electric current flow will reverse the direction of heat flow. The Peltier effect can be expressed mathematically as:

1.4.3 THOMSON EFFECT: When an electric current is passed through a conductor having a temperature gradient over its length, heat will be either absorbed by or expelled from the conductor. Whether heat is absorbed or expelled depends upon the direction of both the electric current and temperature gradient. This phenomenon, known as the Thomson Effect, is of interest in respect to the principles involved but plays a negligible role in the operation of practical thermoelectric modules. For this reason, it is ignored.

NEW TECHNOLOGY IN REFRIGERATION OFFERS SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY TO REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Home refrigerators and freezers consume a great deal of electricity and efforts to reduce energy consumption by improving refrigeration efficiency have been the focus of research over the last 25 years. Through the development of improved motors, compressors, and seals, as well as the introduction of microprocessors, these efforts have reduced annual electrical consumption by refrigerators and freezers in the United States from 1,750 kWh per year in 1970 to 750 kWh per year in 1992. Ongoing research to further improve efficiency has focused on the refrigeration cycle, with particular attention to the Stirling cycle and solid-state magnetic refrigeration. However, cost and reliability concerns continue to override technological advances in these areas, and no major breakthroughs have been made.
Recent work by scientists in Russia, however, has opened the door to a second opportunity in solid-state technology. Analogous to magnetic refrigeration, which cyclically applies a magnetic field to a paramagnetic solid to cause heating and cooling (the magnetocaloric effect), a new technology is based on the electrocaloric effect, whereby an electric field is cyclically applied to a paraelectric solid to cause heating and cooling. The key difference between the two approaches is that large electrical fields are much easier and less expensive to produce than magnetic fields. If advantages can be confirmed through continued research and development, industry will once again have the opportunity to substantially reduce energy consumption by refrigerators.....http://www1.eere.energy.gov/inventions/pdfs/ceramphys.pdf
