I'm currently in the process of reading the great novel by Herman Melville, Moby-Dick. I'm only at page 230, but I wanted to show/express the best or wittiest bit of the entire novel up till now.
In Chapter 16, Ishmael goes for a job interview with Captain Peleg. This captain asks Ishmael why he wants to go a-whaling. One of the reasons Ishmael gives is that he wants to see the world. Captain Peleg sends him to the front of the boat and asks him what he sees. Ishmael replies: "...nothing but water..."
I think this has to be the best bit of the book. Don't you agree?

Who reads this thing at the age of 9. This book is very hard to read, certainly because Melville keeps interrupting the story with "facts" about whales and fishery. Those chapters are so annoying to read. The action chapters are nice, but the rest is just beating around the bush.

It wouldn't surprise me. I tried reading that one when I was about 9 and I just couldn't slog thru it.
