I have this contest running -well, it's closest already, but the winners will be announced soon- and you could participate by sending in a short story with a fixed character. The character had to be a 23 year old who had just graduated from college. I had three people who sent in their story -check them out here http://manictastic.blogspot.com/2008/01/manictastic-short-story-award-entrants.html- and this story I wrote was just to show that I could fulfil my own assignment.
