As the baby amazingly makes its way out of the tight tunnel over a period of two hours, Hildee stoically endures the unfathomable pain alone and in relative silence. The sucking sound of the baby squeezing out of the canal followed by the rapid departure of skinny legs and a gallon of fluid tumbling to the floor is the only noise Hildee makes until she stirs to sit up and attempts to break the umbilical cord. Only a determined and demented sixteen-year old would have enough energy after giving birth to drag her body across the room to grab a broken brick and smash the cord until it breaks the bond between mother and child. This same extraordinary determination to escape and deny the situation gives Hildee the power to stand and make her way to the cabinet for a towel to wipe the blood and fluid from her legs.
