How close were you? I remember a watering hole in Hwange which was especially favoured by elephants and in the evening all the tourist vehicles used to converge there. There was a balcony too for better viewing. One thing that really surprised me was the total discipline. One herd used to drink at the water hole, another would wait quite a distance away, and yet another even further away from there. The herds gave each other time to drink and spaced their arrival so as not to disturb the other. That to me was amazing. One impala I think it was got a little too close to a baby elephant and the baby ellie full of indignation chased it away for quite a distance. That was so funny we were rolling. I noticed the drinking discipline at a waterhole favoured by Kudus too. People who are always in a hurry and wish to get everywhere first can really learn from that. Some day I and my husband would love to go back to Africa. Once it gets into your blood it doesn't get out.
