Checking Your Profile Posted 11 months ago

I'm running into a lot of broken profile pages here at the Buzz. They look fine in Firefox but in IE 6 usually the left column is pushed under the center column and the background for text is gone.

If you don't have access to IE 6 you can always go to

http://browsershots.org/

Submit your profile URL, uncheck the browsers you don't care about and in a little while you will have a visual image of how your site looks in the selected browsers.

I usually check MSIE 7 and 6 as well as FireFox, which is what I use most of the time. Since I have both running on my computer I don't need to go to browsershots, but I've been on 3 profile pages today that were broken.

Here is a hint. If you have added something to your profile page that as a width greater than 285 you probably have a broken profile. It depends on the theme you are using and where the widget is located on the page.

So you don't have to check your profile in the mirror, but you might want to check it at http://browsershots.org/

After all, we all want a good looking profile, especially when we know there are people checking it out.

Converging Verticals in Your Photos Posted 11 months ago

I'm going to guess one of the subject for a lot of our photos are homes, exterior and interior shots.

I'm also going to guess a lot of us have never heard the term "Converging Verticals" If you are a Real Estate Photography they are one of the hard and fast rules. "FIX CONVERGING VERTICALS". They happen when the camera isn't straight to the subject. In this example the camera was located to the right and well bellow the home at street level

I borrowed this image from the Denver Realtor's photo gallery.

Converging Verticals

  1. The first image is the screen capture of the shot. Notice how the up and down lines would come together at some point if they were followed off the picture. These are converging verticals.

    Verticals Fixed

  2. Second using Photoshop Elements filters/camera distortion/ I fixed the verticals so they are up and down.

    Highlights brightened

  3. Third The sky was a little washed out and the shadows were dark. I brought up the highlights to make the home appear brighter and more inviting.
Total time involved: less than 5 minutes. It took longer to write this post.

Empty TP Holder

I use a lot of images on my blog posts. And I take the time to give everyone of them a title tag and an alt tag.

I do mean tags, not titles like P000345.jpg I mean titles that say what they are. The same with the alt tags which are good for W3C compliance, but that is another topic.

Did you know you can bring significant amounts of traffic to your blog through your images? I do all the time. As a matter of fact some days as much as 1/3 of all my traffic is generated from images.

Many times visitors find the images first, then end up as readers to the blog. The same thing happens to me. Often I'm searching for images when I find an interesting site and add it to my feed reader.

You never know what is going to do it. The other day I saw in my Hittail records a search on "empty toilet paper holder" coming from MSN.com Someone was doing an image search and came to one of my blogs with the empty toilet paper holder.

If you search MSN.com for images and type in Empty Toilet paper holder you will see my empty tp holder as number 1. (at least right now)

Here is the direct link to the search. I think it will work and hopefully not over run the blog post window.
http://search.msn.com/images/results.aspx?q=empty+toilet+paper+holder&FORM=MSNH&mkt=en-US

Take a little more time with those images and tags. And if you have a Google webmaster account go in and check to allow Google to include your images. It will help get them indexed a lot faster.

If an image is worth a thousand words. . . how much traffic is it worth?

So it over runs the window, at least the link works.

Geez I wish I could center an image on the page. . .

Tucson Real Estate at Night

I read a review of the blog editor by John Lockwood at Particle Wave. John introduced me to cre8buzz. The jury is still out on whether that is a good thing.

John mentioned the blog editor was primitive at best. I would say that is an accurate description.

This post is a test. There doesn't seem to be any formatting capabilities other than possible inline code. But I guess it is better than chisel and stone.

I live work and sometimes play in Tucson, Arizona. It is a great place to spend the winter. It is mostly tolerable as a place to spend the summer. The trade off most people don't realize for getting out of Tucson in the summer are all the wonderful colors that fill the desert in the summer that are missing during the rest of the year.

I like to take photographs. I use many of them on the blogs I author, but mostly I like taking images that evoke an emotional response. Sometimes that is awe, sometimes wonder, and sometimes a sense of peace.

If you look at the images in my photo gallery you will get a glimps of life in and around Tucson, Arizona.
