If you haven't been following this, police uncovered a case in Austria in which a father kidnapped his 18 year old daughter, forced her to live in his cellar for 24 years and then fathered 7 children with her. He kept three for himself, left her with three to raise in the tiny cellar dungeon ... and one died shortly after birth.

As if that wasn't bad enough ...

*Prosecutors have said Mr Fritzl faces up to 15 years in prison if he is eventually convicted on charges of raping and beating his daughter, and sequestration. *
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7373689.stm (that quote is located near the end of the article)

Only FIFTEEN YEARS??????? I don't care what "civilised" country this occurred in, a sentence of 15 years is SHORTER than the time he kept his daughter incarcerated! And that doesn't even begin to take into consideration the incest and being forced to birth seven children to him and that he then essentially stole three of those kids to raise himself.

Everything about this case truly boggles the mind.

We're all assuming these are people of average intelligence. Why are we doing that? Because WE are of normal intelligence (well, most of us, anyway :) We could never fathom doing this, but these people is obviously not normal. And who knows? Maybe they're just saying she didn't know to protect her. The rest of the story will come out...Sad.

I can tell you, my wife never goes in the basements of the buildings we've lived in. I mean ever. But beyond that, it's hard to picture nobody else knew about this for such a long time. He's got to face a longer sentence, given the number of victims involved, and the length of their "sentences"-- those kids never left that room, and can never fully adjust to the world!

yanno, that part makes sense to me. she was not allowed down there - that was his workshop. it was small, not much reason to go down there. there was a lot of concrete and dirt to muffle any sound. and, they lived on the second floor. another family lived on the ground floor. the entrance to the cellar looks like it might have been outside the building rather than inside. and then the door to the dungeon was only 3 foot high and hidden behind shelves.

yeah, me too. of course, the trial hasnt' even happened yet and some of the crimes are "negated" by the statute of limitations ... still ... unfathomable at least.

Hard to wrap my mind around this horrendous crime - much less the stupid punishment...or should I say slap on the hand.
