Thanks for everyone's comments. I see your point Jackal, I'd never thought of sitting someone opposite. In answer to jmb's question, yes it is a real game, just not one I played. It is a middlegame http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middlegame position from the game Joseph Henry Blackburne - Siegbert Tarrasch, Breslau, 1889.

I love this shot. Like Jackal, I love how it makes you feel that you are sitting at the table, in the midst of a game! Especially since I have no clue how to play chess!

I love the feeling of activity in this picture. The lines of perspective on the chess board draw the eye in to search for which piece to move.
