At The Heart of the Matter

Social networks are just poppin’ up everywhere. I know ya’ll know this far too well. Most of ya’ll, if not all of ya, are chillin’ somewhere else in addition to the buzz. I’m feeling ya. I belong to at least 3 others. So this got me wondering? What makes one social network different than another?

• Is it the features; RSS feeds, good bloggin’ tools, ability to upload video’s, pay for participation, ratings etc?

• Is it the UI (what ya’ll click on to move around the site)?

• Is it cause the site is easy to navigate?

• Is it cause the site gets you more readers?

• Is it because it’s the new “hip” place to be?

I asked all these questions and more, and I’m answering no! They’re all important, but they aren’t what make the difference.

The difference between social networks; what makes one better than the other is its HEART.
Sunset, by: BlueTiger at cre8Buzz
The heart of every social network is its members; the people on the site interacting and engaging everyday. The conversations, the information, and the interaction of the members give a social network its SOUL. The HEART and SOUL of a social network gives it life and that is what makes social networks different.

So knowin’ this, let’s play a game, I dig games!

What’s at the heart and soul of ya favorite social network?

Ant-

Cre8buzz has heart alright! This place rocks. I’m on myspace - rarely check there, it seems outdated, facebook - like going there to interact with folks and use some of the cool apps, active rain - talk about heart… I’ve made friends there I’ll have for life. cre8buzz - down to earth. I’m still finding my way here, but I like it a lot.

Comment from Tom Plant on November 29, 2007, 5:05 pm

I agree with Tom.
I am not thrilled with bloglog…and BC is okay(Its more of a directory for me) I dont belong to any others ‘cept here.
The heart here? You already said it. The community here? Is just great! Friendly, outgoing, helpful and great with feedback! We may put ourselves in a category, but that is just for placement. Everyone from all different categories treat each other with a wonderful respect! Here, we can ‘get to know’ another blog. People actually come by our blogs, I found wonderful, serious, funny, etc people out there.
Funny- they were at the other social networks too.
Just something here, that rocks…

Comment from Jodi(aka daizie) on November 29, 2007, 5:11 pm

You’re absolutely right–it’s the heart, the people who both run the sites and those who frequent them. Someone I met on another site that I got along with tipped me off to cre8buzz and I’m really having a blast wtih it.

Comment from Pand0raWilde on November 29, 2007, 5:12 pm

Ant - I DON’T use MySpace, Facebook, and Never heard of Flikster. I don’t know much about MyBlogLog yet either. I started blogging less than a year ago on Active Rain. I strongly use Active Rain to market my listings, my professional real estate service, mainly so web surfers will “find” me when “Googling”. I have learned so much participating in Active Rain….so much so…that I got an invitation to join your cre8Buzz….and I am glad to have found this network. I am trying to make great social “buddies” here too that try to “thrive and survive” in Real Estate. I believe that “Great Minds Think Alike”. It’s great to have a place to share thoughts, ideas and advice with your peers.

Comment from Chris Bohn on November 29, 2007, 5:50 pm

This site has been so much fun. It seems to be more open and accepting than some other sites. I have gotten more feedback and interaction here in just a few days, than I have in months on other sites. Thanks Ant…

Comment from Tara R. on November 29, 2007, 5:59 pm

So I have to say, I don’t have a ton of social networking website experience. I’ve played at others and found nothing made me really want to come back. cre8buzz feels very comfortable to me. the people here are very warm and friendly. Love the interaction.

Comment from modlmama on November 29, 2007, 6:53 pm

I’m still trying to figure it out, but it IS a little different, allows for professional work mixed with personality!

Comment from Julia on November 29, 2007, 7:03 pm

The Buzz has a different social dynamic than from what I’ve experienced on other networking sites. So, socially it’s great ’cause the community is so friendly.

Rating keeps people encouraged/active and interactive with each other.

Other than that; I’m glad that you can share so much on the site–music, pics, or whatever. Also like it for just about all the reasons mentioned above :D

Comment from Xers on November 29, 2007, 7:34 pm

Ant - Has some really nice features like being able to feature more than one blog or website. As I have mentioned to you already, getting an RSS feed so our blog posts can be displayed should be your next addition to the site. This will be a crital piece in making members stick.

Comment from Bill Gassett on November 29, 2007, 7:45 pm

I know it is the heart! That is all there is and all that is. Active Rain is heart and I love the people I have met there and that led me here. I am still getting around here. I would like to be able to add my real estate shows here on the video part. I would also like to have some features added to the blog section like being able to bold words and add links. Thanks!

Comment from Katerina on November 29, 2007, 8:03 pm

I only use Activerain and my blog log.. my outside blog plus this…i barely have enough time for these. I think the buzz is still in its growing stages and I have only been here for a short time so I’m not sure if it is just a social network or a place for my RE to get some google juice.

Comment from The Real Deal on November 29, 2007, 8:03 pm

Cre8Buzz is the the only one I belong to! I’m not into the whole FaceBook or MySpace thing…too young for me!

I love Cre8Buzz because there is such a diverse group of talented bloggers-it’s truly addicting.

(And the rating idea is great to keep us on our toes!)

Comment from Jill on November 29, 2007, 8:48 pm

Hello.I have a slow old isp and myspace etc, usually take ages to open uo and load, which makes even checking comment and messages a tedious chore.

For me, a social network that loads up quickly and opens messages fast would be high on my hit parade.

Cre8Buzz for some reason loads up at lightening speed, even with my isp.Its one of the reasons I love hanging out here…but its not the only reason.Cre8buzz has many other features that make it special…like the user interface, its like ones own online diary that other people are free to browse. Its beautiful..as are the people here.So far, I met such diverse people. I want to thank you so much for making it available. You guys rock :)

Comment from Jesse on November 29, 2007, 9:54 pm

You are dead on! It’s about heart, it’s all of our hearts beating for each other. That’s the fuel. One collective heart is emerging. The buzz is beating as one heart. The reason for this is because of the time and thoughtful ways that you are going about building this community.

Tom, from MySpace has never asked me for my opinion on anything…I also don’t think he’d really care even if he did.

Antman, you are willing to give, and are yeilded to all of us, and our ideas. That kind of humble, servant leadership is what makes the difference here.

There is nothing contrived about Cre8buzz. This place is what WE make it. The buzz rank rewards our efforts.

It’s the people! I didn’t join the buzz and start looking for everyone I went to high school with. I immediately met NEW people who I could relate to. I think it’s the sense of knowing that we are all in this together that keeps us excited. I don’t think there’s room to take that for granted. The buzz is an adventure, every single day.

Somehow you’ve perfected a social network…even though you don’t really want to be defined as such. Because of interactions, we’ve increased each others self esteem.

Thank you for what you do!

“Ambition, fueled by compassion, wisdom and integrity, is a powerful force for good that will turn the wheels of industry and open the doors of opportunity for you and countless others.”

Social NetWork:
It is a so special all touching in a place and space where individuals are in Synchronicity, in Connection, in Interaction, and more, sharing vital and valuable information so as to bring about experiences that are of enthusiasm, excitement, enjoyment, enchantment, and enlightenment within its portal service. Each social networking portal has its own strengths. I find that Cre8Buzz started well, where bloggers searching for the best registered and joined. After its launching, bloggers registered and joined based on invitations. As a result, we are here mostly family and friends. I have studied Cre8Buzz, I am truly glad bloggers here are matured, pure at heart, communicative, interactive, and more. Much the kind of bloggers I prefer to be associated with. We are now doing: add, join, fave, vote, visit, read, and interactions. I suggest more than this, each blogger can be in a partnership where the dyad do a project for mutual win-win and benefit for all. You can see an example here: Book Project Blog.

What I love about MySpace is that there are so many quirky interesting people there - I can search for dean martin fans or san francisco giants fans or beer bloggers and find lots of people to get to know - I went to a mid century modern conference I found out about on MySpace last year and I’m contemplating a Tiki tour to Seattle in the next couple weeks. What I hate about MySpace is their awful options for web design - the visuals are horrid and I usually have my own music playing while I surf the net, so I really dislike auto start music players (you have a few here btw - yuck!)

I’m on Ballroom Dance Channel - which is a fabulous little network of dance fans. About one thousand members including active participation by Maks and Tony from Dancing With the Stars.

Facebook is a mystery to me. I don’t get it.

On MyBlogLog I’ve found some interesting bloggers and they’ve found me. I really like the fact that I can publish my feeds.

I like Squidoo. The people are very nice and there are plenty of interesting topics to read. And they seem to think I’m interesting, too. One of my lenses was Lens of the Day and I get about 150 visitors a week to my Lens and 25 or so who click on over to my website.

I tried Gather but didn’t like it. I’ve already got lots of content on the web - my site, youtube, flickr, etc. but they were a self contained world that required everything to be posted again on their site.

The people here at Cre8buzz are very nice abd I’ve seen some interesting blogs and other creative material. But because you don’t have a blog feed, it seems very labor intensive. I hope you’ll fix that, otherwise the site is only extremely attractive to newbies. I’ve got 4 years of content already on the net that I’d like to share, but not if I have to repost everything.

Comment from juliemarg on November 30, 2007, 12:59 am

Piper, you’ve reminded me of a great post my sister wrote on her MySpace blog a few years back called “It Turns Out Tom is NOT Our Friend…”

I definitely agree with the comment about the “heart” of a community, but that leaves me a bit dismayed that you’ve left Blog Catalog off the list. I have accounts with MySpace, Blog Catalog, MyBlogLog, Facebook and a handful of others, but BC is the only one (other than Cre8Buzz, now that I’ve discovered it) that I visit regularly. It DOES drive traffic to my blogs, but the main reason I like to hang out there is the core group of regular posters in the discussion forums and the topical discussion groups. I have a writers group over there with more than 400 members.

Comment from Tiffany on November 30, 2007, 1:34 am

I can’t figure out how to use MySpace, it completely bewilders me. I do use Facebook, but only to keep in touch with people I already know, I don’t see it as a blogging community.

I am a member of most of the others - and some more besides - but in the last month or so I have decided to cut back and just stick with Cre8buzz and Blogcatalog because they have the best atmosphere and a far greater sense of real community. Most other social networks I’ve joined just seem to be about adding huge numbers of contacts without ever really getting to know who those people are.

One more thing: I also agree with Jodi’s comment - many of the people I have met here have also been members of other networks, but it’s only now that I have really had chance to get to know them.

Comment from Kate on November 30, 2007, 2:32 am

I belong to several social networks, however, the one I love the most is Cre8buzz. The hardest part for me here was deciding which community to join. To me the heart and soul of a social network are the people. I don’t utilize Facebook except to hook up with long lost friends, I use MyBlogLog to see who has stopped by that I may want to visit but most of that is people looking to monetize their blogs or marketing of some sort. I use Technorati to keep on task with who is mentioning me on their blog. I belong to a build a better blog community which has been an awesome experience in meeting people with incredible talents in a wide variety of areas. I belong to Cre8buzz because of the quality of people I meet here. I don’t get around here as much as I would like but every time I stop by I am off to visit several ‘new friends’ that become new readers of my blog that become old friends that I can ‘talk’ with about common interests, etc.

Comment from Danielle Blogging for Balance on November 30, 2007, 4:03 am

I’ve been in cre8buzz for about two weeks now.
The people here have real talent.
And they can see it in each other.
There is no jealousy and there is real appreciation.
That does a lot for a person’s self confidence.

Also, There isn’t the mindless chatter…’I walked the dog this morning, then brushed my teeth.’ ‘Hello world, I want to save the fishes.’

I personally don’t want to read your diary.
We actually have something interesting to say.

MyBlogLog is a place for people to promote themselves. I think it’s a bit selfish, but it gets the business done.

Comment from Donna on November 30, 2007, 6:23 am

I have a myspace but I don’t do much there! I have flickr too but again don’t do much there. I also have MyBlogLog. I do more there than I do the other 2 I have mentioned. However without MyBlogLog I would have missed this wonderful place!! I love it here and you are right its the heart that makes it a great place to be!!
I am not going to repeat what others have said….
Just going to agree with everyone else!!!
Keep on Rocking!!!

Comment from momto4kidsny on November 30, 2007, 8:42 am

I agree with so much of what has already been said, particularly your comment about heart & soul. I’ve been having such a great time at cre8Buzz & much of what I love about it has to do with its supportive environment. The folks here support and encourage each other. There seems to be a real sense of caring and kindness, even with respect to technical advice. I appreciate the politeness guidelines, too (no swearing…).

I use BC to check recent visitors who aren’t members of cre8Buzz, but it’s not very user friendly and the profile pages are not nearly as attractive over there. The comment boxes on our profile pages make it feel more conversational than at BC. I love the bigger avatar pics, too.

I agree with others that MBL has too many sales pitches and no real sense of community (to me). The design just really doesn’t compare. It’s PC where this is Mac. More industrial, less stylish. Can’t design (or use other talented folks’ designs to customize) your own profile page. And you guys make it so easy!!

The content on cre8Buzz is terrific, too. Bright, talented people here. Interesting, fun, beautiful material. I love that we have fiction writers, political pundits, photographers, parents, and hobbyists.

Probably the best feature is that most of the friends I’ve met here are married, so I can relate to them and I don’t have to worry about funky motives.

You’ve built quite a community, Antman!! Thanks!

Comment from bmgmom on November 30, 2007, 6:15 pm

The difference I find in cre8buzz is the feedback. I see e-mails all the time. It’s a reminder but also an encouragement to come to the site. I didn’t spend much time here to develop connections outside of real estate, and that’s I would like to do. I love Active Rain, and my blogging is primarily there. I am still sorting out if and how to make my blog here different.

Comment from Faina on November 30, 2007, 9:39 pm

What’s at the heart and soul of ya favorite social network?

Myspace - __Great place to play
Facebook - _Great Place to have fun
MyBlogLog –_Great place for meeting & tracking
Active Rain – _Great place to meet and do Business
Flickster - _Never Heard of it till now
Cre8Buzz _Great place to watch grow!!

Yo Antman - you hit the answer on the head! Heart and Soul my friend. Build and they will come! Provide value, and they will stay! If they like you, they’ll listen to you, but if they trust you, they’ll do business with you. It takes true heart and Soul to have a thriving network which is really nothing more than people and relationships! Just my 2 cents before I hit the hay tonight! :-) B-Rad Out!!

Comment from Brad Andersohn on November 30, 2007, 11:47 pm

I use MySpace, but not as a social network…I just post updates for pc security, membership is small and comments almost non-existent, but it does get read.

MBL has a good following and really I am quite new to cre8 but have already met many wonderful people and look forward to meeting many more.

The ‘heart and soul’ comes from the individuals who make a social network successful through interaction, and here at cre8 you experience it in full swing…rock on guys :o)

Comment from Colin on December 1, 2007, 12:05 pm

Myspace - I link with alot of internet marketers there but don’t actively visit it often.
Facebook - _Great Place to hook up with previous acquaintances, friends, and family, I don’t usually find new people there. I created another profile there though to network with internet marketers.
Cre8Buzz - the warmest social network site I have joined..

I am on LinkedIn and MyBlogLog with profiles but I never visit those….I may one day be more active though.

Comment from This AliCat on December 1, 2007, 1:08 pm

What I like most about MySpace is discovering new bands/music, which is what they were originally for, right?

Facebook I have an account on but never check it.

MyBlogLog is good for networking your blog and finding new bloggers, which is what cre8Buzz is great for but does not have that level of involvement…yet.

I’m assuming Flickster is slang for Flickr and I do use my account there a LOT. I can upload full size files of photos for friends to print out and can discover MANY great photogs there.

Never used Active Rain and my plate is full so why bother when…

cre8Buzz is here now and a great place to meet adult writers, photogs, cartoonists, entrepreneurs, beer lovers, foodies, car and motorcycle maniacs, and so much more.

The interaction at c8B is really good - maybe because it’s so young and people are not getting lost in the crowd yet. I hope it continues to retain that heart and soul so that very important element won’t disappear.
It’s up to the members of the communities to make that happen. The platform is already in place.

Comment from Quirkee James on December 1, 2007, 8:56 pm

Ant my man… what you’ve done here with Cre8buzz is amazing on several levels. Yes, there are a bazillion social networking sites out there, but they lack cohesion. For any community to breed true loyalty and longevity, there must be cohesion. Look at what happened to Friendster. People left in droves once MySpace came along. Now MySpace is losing ground to Facebook. And soon, something else will come along to cause a mass exodus from facebook. You know what? I hope it is NOT Cre8buzz. You’re too good for that. Although I haven’t been a member for very long, the people I have met and the real relationships I have built here are 100x more valuable to me than my 20 pages of “friends” on MySpace (in fact, I deleted my account a couple weeks ago). I’m serious when I say that if you ever tore this place down, I would be really sad. Not just cyber-bummed, but really sad. I have made friends who are not just there to amass more friends than the next guy. We all share a common passion (in my case, parenting) and through that we are connected. And we help each other out — like REAL friends do. When was the last time that happened via the internet??

In the end, I know that this is a business. You need to make money. But take it from someone who has done marketing and business development in the startup space for 10+ years — your business concept is only as good as your customer base. If you attract loyal customers - they sell it. They become your evangelists. They become the folks who WANT to see you succeed. I don’t know what your eventual business model will be, but let’s assume it’s advertising. I can tell you that if cbuzz members (who LOVE this place) knew that being responsive to advertising would help keep this place going, they’d do their part. I know I would. Respect your business by respecting your customers and the cycle will spiral upwards, indefinitely.

Sorry - I went on waay too long for a comment. I see a lot of potential in this place and the cohesion and loyalty you are building now will pay off. Keep it up!!!

Isn’t there anyway to get Mashable to reconsider?
I’m signed up with MyBlogLog, BlogCategory, and Facebook. all of which frustrate me. I don’t belong to them for fun or for community. And only go there after much prodding, if I think a real-life friend is trying to get through.
cre8buzz is more than heart. It’s like home. I nominated cre8buzz a lot, but couldn’t figure out how to say what I think are its most remarkable qualities.
Is Mashable eligible to join cre8buzz? If so, invite them. Then they can see for themselves.

I hear Mashable reconsidered and we’re back in :)
