More “Big Night” than “Field of Dreams”

You know those stories about the meteoric rise of some company or product? Where someone with a bright idea and a little moxy becomes a bazillionaire overnight? We all know that’s a load. It doesn’t happen that way. It’s the same thinking that makes us believe that Prince or Princess Charming exist and are right around the corner.
Does that make me unromantic? Perhaps. I think of it as realistic.
My Cre8buzz experience is unlike any other in my career. It took tremendous perseverance to get the site to launch. We lost key people. We never had enough money. There were more requirements than time, developers, and money. Did I mention money?
Somewhat naively, we hoped that once we launched, we’d shake out a few of the kinks, build it, and like “Field of Dreams”, they would come. Nope. It was just hope. It’s taken quite a bit of work to attract the great users that we have today.
Someone sitting around the table nailed it: I think it was Jim. We’ve become the corner restaurant, which earnestly serves good food every day. Perfect? No. High quality? Yes. With soul? We hope so. Our restaurant has picked up a few loyal customers and they are telling their friends. The reviews are pretty good, but some are saying: “who needs another Italian/Mexican/fill-in-the-blank restaurant (or in our case, another Social Network). We’re starting to have to take reservations on Saturday nights.
Reminds me of the movie “Big Night” where the owners of a struggling restaurant put it all on the line and create a feast of a lifetime in hopes of impressing a famous jazz musician. If you’ve seen the movie, you know how it ends. It’s a great reminder, in my opinion, that the joy is in the cooking and not in the outcome.

If there’s anything I’ve learned in this past year of blogging, it’s that “Build it and they will come” is a load of..well..something unpleasant.
Success comes from getting out there and going after it.

I’ve heard of lots of “overnight” successes that took lots of hard work and TIME to happen. I love the site and frankly hate every other social networking site I’ve checked out. Having been involved with a slow-rise business, I know the grunt work it takes (and money . . .) but I think a lot of us are cheering you on and foreseeing great things for the Buzz.

The site is great. Unlike a lot of other social network sites, the members aren’t out to build tallylists of how many friends/communities/neighbourhoods they have or are members of. There is a great sense of community, with great interaction throughout the membership.
So glad I got an invite.
