YouTube or ScrewTube . . Lying on Social Networks
Popularity: 11%
Myspace; Cheapspace?! It seems the lure of millions of fans, the potential of countless hits and endless opportunities is just too much for Hollywood Record Executives, and the like to turn down. Did ya see their most recent gaffe; Marie Digby?
My girl Marie is a pretty tight “new” artist. She has been gittin mad love on YouTube. I mean mad love, over 2.3 million views. A 24-year old aspiring artist, Marie has some sick homemade music videos’ (check her out), that have been getting crazy attention. Her meteoric rise is what the Internet is all about and if ya read this blog regularly you know it’s what we love. The little guy gittin’ mad exposure. Her video’s have been played on MTV, she can be heard on L.A. Sacramento, and Portland, radio stations and was recently on the Carson Daily Show. My girl just blew up! Check this press release from last week: “Break through YouTube Phenomenon Marie Digby Signs With Hollywood Records.” My girl made it! The net has done it again. Another star is born out of anonymity. Wrong!
So what’s the problem? What is wrong with this picture? The problem, AUTHENTICITY, baby. The record executives have punked ya. In an attempt to capitalize on the power of the net and drive word-of-mouth they played ya. My girl has been a signed artist with Hollywood Records for two years. She signed in 2005. Her homemade videos were part of an elaborate marketing campaign to promote her. Ya, it is her singin. Ya, she did the video’s herself, but she wasn’t an undiscovered artist who stumbled into success and fame. She had already been discovered and signed to a record deal.
Here is my point, if the cats in Hollywood don’t stop dupin’ us, their gonna cut their nose off in spite of their face. Remember, LonleyGirl15? Another Scam!
One of the key elements to Social Networks is the expectation of authenticity. What you see is what you get. When this is exploited, folks will become suspicious, if suspicion creeps in the draw is compromised. We can’t underestimate the trust factor to the draw of the YouTubes, Facebooks, Myspaces, and yeah the Cre8Buzz’s of the world. Traditional media has lost our trust and as a result we are kickin’ it in places we “believe” to be real and authentic.
Hollywood, ya got the right idea. Social networks are exactly the place to be. There is mad talent to be found and yes, there is opportunity to promote, but keep it real. Don’t lie to us. Don’t tell us something is what it isn’t. You’ll be rewarded, but if ya keep dupin’ us, you’ll suck this well dry like you have all the others.
And Marie, that box on your Myspace page that said “Type of Label” shoulda been check Hollywood Records and not “None” like you did. Ya just came out to the world a liar. Not good.
Peace, I’m Out!
Oh yeah, your Myspace blog entry “I NEVER in a million years thought that doin my little video of Umbrella in my living room would lead to this; tv shows, itunes etc!!” looks pretty silly now that we all now the TRUTH!

I’ve never heard of Marie, but I read the story yesterday in The Wall Street Journal. Doesn’t make me want to rush out and buy her CD. I don’t like being lied to.
Not. At. All.
And it’s a major blow to all those undiscovered talents who think that good things really can happen to them.

Oh, I keep hearing about things like this. How could someone do this and live with herself? Yuck.

and the fact that she lied will live on long after the positive comments — the net can be an extremely negative place - don’t voluntarily give them something to bag on you about
