Why is it ok to take your shoes off on a plane?

I take my shoes off anywhere I can. I think “why do we have too wear shoes?” I think this multiple times daily. There is nothing stinkier than an old pair of shoes you are right, so why do we have to wear those stinky shoes anyways?? LOL…
