28 million dollar ROI?

28 Million Dollars a year, good gawd! Damn, ya’ll! That is some serious green. My question; is Roger Clemens worth that kinda money?
Let’s break it down. He will start pitching in June, he will get about 21 starts. If he can go 12 and 5 (with 5 no decisions), a good record, he will give the Yankee’s 12 wins. Damn, that is 3.36 million a win. Ooooh boy, I need a job like that. That is a lot of coin, especially when it ain’t gonna make a bit of difference in the Yankees season. The Yankees are already 7.5 games back, (yeah I know it is early, and the Red Sox always collapse in September but, my point still holds up) their pitching rotation is still jacked, and their bullpen sucks too. 12 wins in a 164 game baseball season is not worth 28 million dollars. Let’s also assume that who ever would be pitching if Roger didn’t come over was at least competent and mustered at least 5 wins out of the 22, now Roger is bringin a whoppin’ net 7 wins. Damn, Steinbrenner, I thought you were smarter than that, 28 million for 7 wins, I’m not seein’ it dawg.
Hold on now ya’ll, cause I got more to say. Steinbrenner isn’t all that stupid. Roger is worth it in the intangibles. Everything has greater, immeasurable value, and tapping into this is where the great separate themselves from the good.
So what am I saying? Check it like this.
Since Rogers announcement the web has been buzzin like crazy with stories, bulletins, blogs (just like me) talking about it. Every radio station, sports show, newspaper, and magazine is talking and writin’ about it, every day. It’s everywhere money! Ya can’t get away from it. Exposure value, huge I’m seeing an uptick in the sale of Yankee gear already.
I got more, the Yankees moral was headin in the wrong direction. Yankees in last place, those words have been mentioned in 20 years. Last place Yankees is a state tragedy. Now that they have Clemens, ya gotta know the team just got a huge boost in morale. If ya saw their faces when it was announced on T.V. during the Yankees/Mariners game, you would a thought they just won the World Series. Clemens just gave the Yankees a “Red Bull” size boost in confidence, energy and morale. Is it a 28 million dollar boost? I say so.
Far too often we look to the measurable, objective numbers to determine ROI. The win is in the ability to map the objective with the subjective. Remember my Sanjaya Post? We are a complicated bunch. Impacting us, should be seen as a complicated task. There is no black and white success measurement. Every ROI cannot be calculated through an calculator, ya gotta look deeper.
How do you look to measure investments in your company? How do you measure the success in your marketing department, do you have metrics that go beyond the numbers? Like I said, we are crazy. We bought the pet rock, we celebrate Paris Hilton, and we made Brittney Spears and William Hung famous. Our choices, needs desires and wants are far more complex than what the analytics can tell us.
You go Clemens, you go Steinbrenner, cause you may get your moneys worth in other areas’ but ya ain’t gonna make it to the World Series.
GO SOX!!!!!!

Do you see the monster Majic Johnson has created? All these guys who can’t retire and stay retired is getting old. Michael Jordan kept going and coming a million times. Clemens gets bored every spring and has been doing un-retirement tours for how long - three or four years now? Barkley barked about it - did he unretire once? I can’t remember. Do we really need a 40 something Scottie Pippen in the NBA?
Somebody tell these old farts to stop pimping their sports. Go into coaching like normal beyond-your-prime yesteryear stars or sit your old butts down once and for all!
