Do you have it in you?

A couple went on date night, yeah date night.  Something tells me that some of you married folks may be over-due on your date night.  So get with it, but anyway back to my point.   A couple is on date night.  They are at the symphony.  They are completely enthralled by the most amazing pianist.  She is performing her solo, pounding away at the keys.  The gorgeous sound is filling the auditorium.  The audience is captivated by the powerfully moving music she is producing.  The couple is blown away.  So impressed, the gentleman, who fancies himself an impressive pianist, leans over to his wife and whispers . . . "I would give my life to play like that."

Upon hearing this, his wife, not taking her eyes off of the stage whispers back . . ."She did!"

What are you willing to give your life for?  How important are your goals to you?  Do you really want to make a living blogging?   Do you really want to be promoted to V.P.?   Do you really want to be happier in your marriage?  Do you really want more?  What are you "really" willing to do to get it?

We are bombarded, I mean absolutely bombarded, with stories and images of overnight success.  The rags to riches stories. They make good stories, but they are not the whole story.  The sad part is, no one likes to talk about the work, what happens behind the scenes.  We scoff at the parents who have their kids practicing 6 hours a day, but applaud and glorify the Tiger Woods, and Michelle Wei’s of the world.  Hello, how the hell do you think they got that good?

My point, there is a direct relationship between effort, commitment and sacrifice and success.  Here is an old cliche, "there are no shortcuts".   If you want to be successful with your blog, your business, your family, your hobbies, your marriage, you get my point,  you had better be ready to put in the effort.

I am generally an optimist, but in this area, my pessimism sneaks out.  Too many of us have been bamboozled, and straight up schooled to think we are putting in the right amount of effort and sacrifice.  Guess what, we aint!

"The value of something is not measured by how badly you want it but by what you are willing to give up for it!"

The decision is yours!  Now get real, make changes and go get what you want.  Because if you don’t someone else will.  Besides, I think you’ve got the talent.

I often have to stop and remind myself that I’ve only been dabbling in crafts for a few months now and people won’t automatically flock to see what I’ve done. Yet, it’s frustrating. I read blogs (like Blair Peter’s Wise Craft) and am, at the same time, in a state of envy and awe. I feel like I am in highschool again where I want to be popular too! I know I am not working as hard as I can, and I blame a lot of it on the fact that I’ve got three young and clingy children. The thing is, I AM a hard worker, so much so that other areas in my life suffer because I’m concentrating on just one thing. I guess, slowly but surely, I will find my groove and my little crafts will speak for themselves.

Well how’s that for a morning ramble??

Garrett,

Don’t be so hard on yourself. The objective is to align your efforts with your goals. It is about prioritization. I think your family is a good priority. I mean, shoot, it is family. Balance is tough, no question. They key is being “real” with yourself. Ask yourself the tough questions. Don’t kid yourself. You already have the answers and know what the right balance is. The key is just accepting the truth and being ok with it. I don’t know how many High-School events Tiger missed, but something tells me he is OK with that! I don’t know, call me crazy!
