2007, end of the underdog
Popularity: 5%
Here is my only prediction for 2007; it will be the demise of the underdog. That is right, the playing field will be leveled, and everyone will be perceived as equal. There will no longer be the disrespected little guy taking on Goliath. Underdogs are dead. This is my 07 prediction, and to prove it look at The Boise State Broncos. If you’re not a college football fan, I apologize, but it is clearly the best example in the early days of 2007. So if you love a Cinderella story, I am sorry but they are over. No mas! Finito!
Pretty bold prediction uh! No more underdogs! OK, probably not going to happen, BUT we will see a tremendous shift in information, power, and most importantly exposure. Look, social networks, blogging, and web 2.0 are catapulting the little guy. Yeah, boooyyy we got a chance now. The ability to hoard information is diminishing and in many cases has ended. The ability to control access to the masses has clearly ended. The need for huge sums of capital to gain exposure and compete is gone. The term expert is being redefined at a rapid pace. The components of Goliath are dwindling quickly. The playing field is being leveled. It is my unscientific belief that this demise of the underdog is a direct result of the Long-Tail theory. If obscure things, people, ideas etc now have a chance, then are they underdogs? I say no. There can be no such thing if everyone has a chance, if the playing field is equal. Now, here is the other part of the point. It doesn’t mean that some people, companies, etc. don’t have an advantage, it means we all have more than just a fighting chance.
Success will be measured in 07 more on talent, commitment, hard work and ones ability to cre8buzz than, who they know for access, capital and credibility. We will see in 2007, as we did in 2006 and even a little in 2005, complete unknowns rise to stardom from out of no where. Housewives, turn bloggers, will find themselves cast into the spotlight. Twelve year old gamers will soon be courted (if it hasn’t happened already) to be spokesmen because they became online sensations. We have already seen it with Music. Online bands taking off without a label or manager. It is just gonna keep on cruisin into every possible area you can imagine.
So why do I tell you this? Hope baby, hope. Hope is what keeps us going. I see ya’ll scrambling around the net trying to get users, followers, readers, etc. I know, ya’ll are trying to get the eyeballs, let the world know you have something to say, trying to get some love. Well, it is not work wasted, because if you got talent, if you have good content, if you are more committed than the next guy and you got the guts to persevere your gonna make it baby. This may sound silly and maybe even obvious to you but before you dismiss it as a duh!! You ask a few folks who remember 1970, 1960, 1950 and ask them what an idea and some effort could have done back then. My gut is telling me, you’ll get a smile and a story about how they had to walk 2 miles to school, uphill, both ways, in a foot of snow, in July. And you know what they won’t be lying.
Hey little guy . . . you are no longer an underdog. You are a force, if you want to be!
The ants have megaphones!!!!!!!! Ooooohhh weeeee!!
