I just spent three days in the dark in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. I didn’t realize the powerful potential of such a large hurricane could have such a devistating effect on the US North East. Being in Ohio, the usual hurricane related weather is a thunderstorm. But the wind was blowing steadily at about 75 miles an hour. Trees are down everywhere. Our local electric company had sent a delegation to Texas, so they and their generators weren’t available to help out.

Three days without power makes you rethink your life. What are our priorities? Are we truly this boring without outside stimulation? How dependent are we on this world’s resources?

We had our generator hooked up to our freezer and refrigerator, so we didn’t lose any food. We attempted to wash clothes. Don’t try it. Generators don’t like washing machines. Or dryers. I felt a little Amish, hanging my underwear on the clothesline.

One neighbor had a large fish tank at the end of their driveway, cleaned, empty, and with all the filtering, scooping, and straining tools inside. That speaks volumes.

Global warming may make us think a little harder about our lives…..

We were lucky. We didn’t lose power other than several times for a few seconds. It is a bit surreal that a Hurricane could hit Ohio!

I found while many struggled and were lost without their computers, tv’s and gadgets, others found some benefits.

I had one set of friends who got together with their neighbors, rented a generator and pooled their food. Every night was a different dinner at someone’s house. Sort of a cross between progressive dinners and camping. They made it fun.

Funny you mention the Amish. My UPS delivery man and I were discussing becoming Amish. Obviously I didn’t or I wouldn’t be commenting here right now.

I do think an event like this brings out the best & worst in people. Power will come back on and the only major losses are food and time (and pets if you own fish). It also can be a temporary hardship on a business.

I really feel for those who lost their homes, businesses, all their possessions and even loved ones where the storm really hit hard.
