As a family, we eat out A LOT, too much, really, but who’s counting?  Many times, it’s for convenience, if we are on the go and don’t have time to cook dinner before a night of activity begins.   We are also a house full of picky eaters and frankly, it’s a lot easier to eat out than  1.)  to argue with kids about eating what I made  or  2.) Making 6 different meals.

Now, it can get expensive, yes.  I try to be very frugal and conscious of what we’re spending and I heart DEALS.    Unlimited free kids meals are euphoria to me!  Even when they offer 2 kid’s meals per adult, I’m good!  Not so much when they only offer one per adult because then I’m still paying for two and that just may not be worth it!

That being said,  my husband is Mr. Non- Confrontation.   He gets embarassed when we get stuff for free,  he hates it!  Is it a pride thing or a man thing?  I dunno.

Take last night, we went to a local pizza parlor that has a kids eat free night on Mondays- 2 kids per adult- perfect!  When the food came, he realized what a large portion the kids recieved for free- he felt guilty!  I think he partially wanted to pay full price for them!  WTF?  I didn’t make the rules- the restaurant did.  If they offer kids eat free , I will come.

He also hates it when I ask for special preparation or things on the side.  It embarasses him, too- but why, I ask you?  WE ARE PAYING FOR IT ( I don’t ask for special treatment for the kid’s meals since many times I am not paying for it!)  It’s not like I’m asking for a vile of blood from their firstborn- I just want it without onions!  I guess he hates that it draws attention to him.  He is MORTIFIED when I send something back.  So much so, that I rarely do it anymore!

Who remembers the restaurant scene from When Harry Met Sally (no, not that part), but the part where Sally is ordering- But I’d like the pie heated and I don’t want the ice cream on top, I want it on the side, and I’d like strawberry instead of vanilla if you have it, if not then no ice cream just whipped cream but only if it’s real; if it’s out of the can then nothing… yeah, that’s me.

When she did it, she seemed quite high maintenance.   When I do it, I try to smile and be nice and not too bitchy about it (but maybe I’m just in denial.)  Here’s the thing, though, I am a picky eater and I am paying for the food- don’t I have the right to order it the way I like it?

I just got home from picking up a carry out order and my salad didn’t have the cheese that I ordered on it.   Sure, it’s only $1, but it’s a principle.  I  was charged for the cheese and  I don’t really like the salad without the cheese.   When I noticed it, I automatically reached for the reciept.  My kids sighed, ”Mom, you’re not going to call and complain, are you?”  GREAT!  Now my kids are embarassed by me, too!

OH, how funny!!! I am a lot like you - if I’m paying for it - I want it MY way!
Back when my kids were small (3 boys) - there were no deals for kids - so we didn’t eat out.
But…eating out is a treat - you ARE paying for it - and to me that gives you ‘directing’ rights! I will not hesitate to send back a steak that is not rare (how often do I get steak?), and I can just see my hubby shrinking in his chair. He never says when he gets something wrong - he doesn’t want me getting on my “send-it-back” horse.
So - keep on complaining! YES!!! I am right behind you with the duct tape to put over complaining mouths… :-)

My mom used to do this (still does) a ton when I was little and I would get SO dang embarassed and now it’s me doing it and it is TOTALLY the principle!

It’s scary to me to return stuff that isn’t right; I’ve heard horror stories about what people in the kitchen do to “picky eaters.”

I think you have every right to have things your way (sounds like BK) but think you should think twice depending on the type of establishment…you never know what may come back on your plate!

Oh, but you SHOULD complain. It seems we never get our food orders right… there is always something missing or wrong.

If you are nice about it, I don’t see any problem.

But I have now taken up the habit of not moving from the drivethru until the entire contents of the bag have been checked by US for accuracy… sad really.
