Yesterday, I received this lovely gift - the gift of nothing.

It reminded me of the story when a child gave his mother a present - all wrapped up and beautiful, yet when she unwrapped it and opened the box, it appeared empty. When she questioned her son about the ‘empty’ box, he protested in tears that it was NOT empty - he had filled it with hugs and kisses.

Yesterday was m our 5th Wedding Anniversary. A lovely incredible gift in itself - a second chance at love - given to me after so many years of hurt - a joy that I appreciate every single day.

After the normal busy-ness of a Sunday morning - the bustle of going to church, setting up the video streaming, singing praise as part of the Praise team, being able to hear my honey preach the sermon, as the senior pastor was still recovering from surgery - after all this, and doing the chores at home - my gift commenced.

We went to a new place for dinner - a date with nothing planned, and it was like time suspended as we sat at the table. We talked and talked - about nothing much. We looked at one another, held hands, rejoiced in just being together - with nothing that ‘had’ to be done.

Later, at home - after Mama had gone to bed, we both were just quiet in the living room - with nothing to do. The TV was on - in a sea of reruns, we were watching stations we never knew were there - and he, reclining in his chair, and me with my feet up on the loveseat - the peace of ‘nothing’ descended.  We dozed and woke - we shared some crackers and cheese - a small joy just in the sharing - and time seemed to stretch out - and I savored each moment - this quietness, this lovely ‘nothing’.

Some folks would say it was kind of a boring day, filled with routine tasks, and not much else - no big party - no extravagant meal - no huge entertainment - but I had unwrapped the loveliest gift of all for this anniversary - the gift of ‘nothing’ - to treasure forever!
