I need some advice from my wonderful Buzzer pals, and along the way I hope I don’t sound like a complete smuck.
Here’s the deal ~ I’ve been getting what I think are spam comments on my home blog. I say ‘think’ because the first half of the comment sounds legitimate, goes to the subject of my post and seems fine. It’s the second part that is a little ’sketchy.’
The second part, if taken alone, makes no sense ~ or at least is a huge stretch to be related to the topic.
Clicking through to the commentor’s URL took me to a Website devoted to selling a particular product, and included text that is word for word from the comment made. So, it looks like the comments are just an attempt by this blogger to use my site to drive traffic to hers. I’m very uncomfortable with that.
To add to the ’sketchy-ness,’ the first time I checked, the blog roll was almost site for site from my blog. Kinda creeped me out.
For now, I’ve just been marking the comments as spam, but feel bad about that. I don’t want to shun someone simply because I jumped to the wrong conclusion.
I asked my college kid’s opinion, being that she is fairly neutral here. She suggested I just send this commentor a private e-mail asking what the deal is. I thought about that, but the first draft sounded more than a little snobby.
Any advice would be welcome… am I overreacting, or does this sound odd to you all too?

Hmmmm… it’s a toughie. I would probably clear them out from my comments as well. It’s one thing to provide some credible discussion with the host blogger, but quite another to simply use their comments section to promote your site like that. It does sound sketchy to me.
But while I’m here, please go visit me at MY blog here…..
(just kidding!)
Good luck.

Spam!!!

I agree - spam! Get rid of it. You felt it was “wrong” and that’s a big clue - go with your gut, and just delete them - they’ll get the point, and move on to someone else. Meantime you’re not helping them.
Just my 2 cents…

I wouldn’t contact anyone directly. That’s probably what they want. Sorry you’re having that problem and sorry I can’t give you any advice on it!

You could could always go over to their site and spam them right back. Put links to all of your best blog posts in each one. Then copy/paste your comment into each post of theirs. I have never done this but it sounds like fun! Maybe I will try it next time I get some spam.

Sounds like you are the proud owner of a “Spamment”. If it smells like Spam, tastes like Spam and sounds like Spam, it is probably Spam. I’d delete it and don’t worry.
I have 2 examples of Spamments:
Smart Spammer will make a comment sort of related, perhaps mention a few key points in your post or blog. Then twist it to make a pitch. The comments on the other blogs will be very similar.
Spammy Spammer with leave a totally unrelated comment about where you can buy great Men’s Suits for less.
You can find the same comments verbatim on all the other blogs. I did a short post in my “bitch blog” back in February.http://colormebitter.blogspot.com/2008/02/spam-is-four-letter-word.html
The one comment is me being stupid. Most of it is a spamment I got on my blog with a slight edit.
BTW: As Cre8Buzz gets more popular, there will be some of that here. I am already seeing the signs.

If you like the comment and can edit it…cut out the second paragraph (the commercial) and just add a line at the bottom…
“comment edited for off topic content”.
The commentor will get the hint, or stop commenting.

I’ve been getting some of those lately too. Let me know what you find out, so I can fix the problem too!

Wow. I thought it was pork shoulder and ham. Just kiddin’, it’s spam. They are getting more creative every day. “Nukedad said…blah, blah, blah” with some of my post in the trackback, but when you go to the site it’s always the same theme; The header is the car tunnel with the lights on the ceiling.
