The community if Big Bear is excited. We have a 25 year old local man that will represent the United States in the Olympic Marathon in Beijing.

Ryan Hall (October 14, 1982 in Big Bear Lake, California) is an American long distance runner. He is the fastest American-born marathoner in history, and will represent the United States in the marathon at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

I often see Ryan training. I saw him this morning along North Shore Drive. His father Mickey Hall was riding his bike and Ryan was running. It is amazing to see a person that can run like this. The first thing that I notice is his stride and how he looks to be floating along effortlessly. While I don’t claim to know Ryan personally, I can say I have watched him grow up. Big Bear is a small community, Ryan and his siblings have attended the same nursery school, elementary school and high school as my children.

The Move a Million Miles for Ryan Hall Campaign is sponsored by The Lighthouse Project.  The Lighthouse Project challenges you to help “Move a Million Miles” before Ryan’s Olympic Marathon this summer in Beijing, China. Through shared pride and support for Ryan, this spirit initiative encourages an engaged and active lifestyle, as well as demonstrates the benefits of integrity, commitment and involvement to our youth. Not only is this the first time anyone has ever pledged this kind of support for an athlete, but it also is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to personally participate in the Olympic Dream. You can be part of this historic effort and make a healthy difference in both your life and the lives of others. Participation is simple, and we don’t need your money - just your miles.

Get up, get out, and log your miles.
Simply log your miles each day and submit your report each week. Miles can be from any human-powered activity such as running, walking, hiking, biking, skating, snowshoeing, etc., and all miles help us reach our overall goal of a Million Miles. Reporting is easy: submit your mileage each week via phone, mail, fax, e-mail or the website. The final day to log mileage will be Sunday, August 24, 2008.

How cool is this? Neat to read about - and the “Move a Million Miles” is a cool idea too! May have to get in on that!

Very cool! Today, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the annual Bellin Run took place. World-renowned runners participate; it is always impressive to note the strides of the winners (especially the South Africans, who typically win it; they are amazing and beautiful; smooth). I wonder if Ryan was there??
