RSS piper of love,

Long ago, maybe in October or something, I asked Antman if I could have two Friend Boxes.  Antman always bends over backwards to please, but he couldn’t help me out with this one.  He told me that it would be impossible due to coding and whatnot.

See, back then, even though I was still a newbie, I could already tell that the Friend Box might become an issue for me.  I had cruised enough profiles, and seen the buzzers who removed their Friend Boxes, and I understood why, but knew that route wasn’t for me.  I like to show off my friends.

So, I was stuck where we all get stuck, trying to decide which eight avatars would hold court in my Friend Box.  I have had the same avatars in my Box since forever.  No doubt that Emery, Momo, Mishi, Jenna, Amy, Joeprah, BD, and Xers are some of my closest friends… but all the same, I’ve made lots more amazing friendships than just those good folk.

It’s stressful, and can feel like total rejection to get moved out of a Friend Box too.  Believe me, I know.

Then, the other day I was conversing with my pal Quirkee James, and he mentioned something that struck me as pure brilliance!  He said he wished he could set his Friend Box on shuffle, and ahhhhhhhh a light bulb went on in my brain.  QJ is something like a genius!

Why not set my Friend Box on shuffle?

I’ve been deliberating the pro’s and con’s since then, trying to figure out how to institute this concept.  So, here it is now, a sort of formal announcement… and perhaps a revolution might begin.

I want to remove the obligation, and guilt, that Friend Boxes bring.  I want to show off all my friends.  I want to feel free to rotate friends in and out, without hurting feelings.  Can it be done?  We shall see.

I’m going to set mine on shuffle, and rotate friends periodically.  It will hopefully make my Friend Box fun again, and hopefully no one will feel left out anymore.

Photobucket

How do you feel about your Friend Box?  How do you like the idea of setting it on shuffle?  Should we set a day of the week as cre8buzz’s rotate your friends day?  Then we could cruise and see new avatars, and meet even more people, and see more content than perhaps we do now.

What say you?

I H.A.T.E. the Friend Box. I am constantly removing it from my profile. The rotation idea doesn’t suck, though…..

I took my friend box off long ago and I wouldn’t put it back even if there was some automatic rotation.

I consider my recently visited box my Friends list.

If any Buzzer wants to be on it, they pop on in and viola! My best buzz buds on rotation.

Plus, I don’t think those chicks up there - my friends in real life - need to be in a cre8Buzz Friend Box to know how much they mean to me…same goes with at least a few dozen people at cre8Buzz :)

    i LOVE this idea!!!

I like that idea a lot, because that would give people more exposure in general. I always click on new faces that I see in other people’s Friends, just to say hi and check out blogs. It’s one place that would feature Buzzers who may not rank high enough to be seen otherwise.

Brill! But how would you do it, by coding or a manual shuffle?

I have been debating about just having the recent visitor box only too… but this might work as well!

I like the shuffle idea. I also like Huckdoll’s idea of taking the box off.(didn’t kknow you could ) It is hard to put friends in order. I do also like the idea of tying the order to how frequently someone visits AND leaves a comment.

I love the idea…although until now I have not even thought about it..I leave my friends box alone..it has never been altered to put friends top or bottom..all the friends are..”friends”.I dont have any favourites

    Thanks for all the comments!

To me, the Friend Box has always been more about exposure than announcing loyalties to ‘real’ friends.

In this Web 2.0 world, and inside the Buzz, exposure is kinda what it’s all about. Not a popularity contest, although there are some who will always feel competitive about it.

I only click on avatars that I see on other profiles, that’s how I get my buzz on. I don’t go to other profiles because I WANT to be seen on their page, I go there because I WANT to see them and their stuff.

I love the concept, Piper. However, as you probably know, it can be a major pain in the rear-end to have to go to friend #100 and move them alllll the way up to the top eight. I’m anxiously awaiting a new and improved way of doing this–perhaps more like the awesome, new photo arranging!

How did I miss this post yesterday? Oh yea, Razor scooter crash followed by painkilling Dos XX. Now I know what your comment meant last night! ;)

Now if we can just get the automatic shuffle button on there. It is a pain to move friend #100 up to the top 8.

Huckdoll’s idea of the recently visited by box being a shuffled friends list is good, but if you have a ton of people coming by, which top Buzzers do, then some friends will go unnoticed.

I think an automatic shuffle would be amazing, particularly for computer d’opes like me.

Hey, automatic shuffle, sounds like a new dance move ;).

    I know, I’m a knob.

I like the shuffle idea, if it could be programmed…Antman?

@Piper ~ I appreciate your comment and I do agree the rotation is brilliant for the people that like the Friends Box. I do use the concept on my own blog.

My blog gives me ten fold the exposure as I do on the Buzz and I highlight eight blogs monthly on the front page. I’m quite sure bloggers work gets more exposure being there than from being in a Top 8 box on cre8Buzz…a place where my own exposure is the only thing really important when it comes down to it.

In my opinion, Top Friends boxes carry a stigma from places like Myspace and Facebook. Cliques and exclusivity - and my opinion didn’t change after I came here.

Again, you make a good point and I hope this take off for you guys!

Confess I never thought of this either - and I have never tried to re-arrange the friends…..having to deal with the photos killed any interest in doing the same elsewhere.
Didn’t know you could remove it either….interesting!
Kinda like the idea of the ‘recently visited’ as a friends box of sorts….at least it would be constantly changing.
Would be kinda cool to shuffle them - but I sure wouldn’t bother if it’s manual! Too lazy.

I think it’s an awesome idea and I would love to shuffle my friends, too!
