Thanks to everyone who commented on the post about posting your kids photos online. A quick summary of what I learned:
- • post pics but use an alias for each kid
- • post safe, non-suggestive photos
- • understand that a blog is just a new medium for information, much like the evening news or a newspaper - when it comes down to it, a photo on a blog vs. a photo in the paper isn’t that much different
- • you can’t prevent people from photographing your kids in public places
- • there’s a fine line between looking out for your child’s safety and being stifling and over-protective
- • use common sense when sharing photos and personal information on your blog
- • run it by your kids before posting and teach them the nature of the Internet and posting on blogs
While I’m still undecided, I am thinking about posting a photo or two in the future. After all, mentioning your kids in text is one thing, but a photo can spice up the personality of the post with great effect. Besides, how can people not like a picture of your kids? They’re way cuter than everyone else’s, right?

It was a topic that most of us parents have probably thought about, so it was nice to be able to hear others’ perspectives on it. Thanks, Pete!

yes. Some very good points. As a photographer, I also recommend locking galleries when possible. When publishing just one picture in a post I always limit titles to first names only.

Good, good advice! I have struggled with this one too….
How on earth did I miss the original post?

I need to think up a good nickname for my kids, don’t I? By the way…there are some photos that I had no idea where suggestive, but are suggestive…and that just irritates me that anyone could see them that way. I put way too much of my life on line as it is, I know, and often have to reign myself in to keep from over exposure.

Good synopsis. I think everyone has to decide what they are comfortable with, but these are excellent guidelines!

Another thing to watch for is if you do post pictures, but don’t use names, be careful what the picture filename is.
For example (ficticious names) You write a post about something your son did, carefully don’t name him (maybe use an alias or first letter only), then upload a picture for your post from your computer called ‘harry_climbing_a_tree.jpg’. Depending on the gallery it may still retain the name and all your efforts to are wasted.
Thanks for the useful post. Ian

I missed the first post. This is a topic I am interested in. I use first names & usually old photos. Nothing suggestive or at least I hope not. I have never had an issue & am curious if you heard from someone who did. I would think if you did not use your real name & give your address out, posting photos would be o.k. Without stories about my family, I wouldn’t have much of a blog.
