Every year for the past six years I have had one or more of my 4 daughters going to the prom. I don’t allow them to go as Freshman, so I save a year.
What does saving a year mean in this context? It means drama, a ticket to the prom, a new dress, new shoes, hair dresser, nails and pedicure, corsage and boutonniere, dinner out and transportation. Did I mention money? These are all of the things my daughters feel they are entitled too. If I so much as suggest less than this bare minimum, I am once again the only Dad that doesn’t celebrate this fun event.
Next comes the questions:
Can we take your new car since it is big enough for all 8 of us?
What time will I have to be home, the dance ends at 1 am?
Can’t I go out to eat after the dance with my friends?
I’m now on my third daughter through this stage and at this point I have lowered all of my standards well below my initial intentions of six years ago…..They are great kids and none of them have ever disappointed me yet. I guess I really should be celebrating!

Doesn’t they guy pay for anything? I think my kids are only entitled to one great prom…right?
Don’t give in to peer pressure.
I mean daughter pressure…

Sounds as though you’ve done an excellent job in raising your daughters!

Have to admire your strength - wow - four daughters!
I also had all boys - most of whom feigned disinterest in the Prom - for they didn’t want to spend the money.

Four daughters…wow. My heart goes out to you. I think this stuff has gotten way out of hand. My niece paid $400 for a prom dress! Add to that the expenses of the rest, and you could make some people’s mortgage payment! Kind of obscene, really. But yes, I’ll be writing the checks in about three years. (NOT for the dress, though; she’s going to have to borrow her cousin’s $400 dress!)
