Hopefully, most MS patients will not be shocked by this article. In an effort to provide a more balanced view of Tysabri, please note that the Tysabri label indicates that abnormal liver function tests with Tysabri use is 5% versus 4% in the placebo treated patients, so basically there is not much difference between the two. See page 13 of the Tysabri label: Tysabri TOUCH Program/Label/Patient Medication Guide located at:

Severe hepatic injury can and has occurred with both Avonex, Rebif and Betaseron (all interferons).."Severe hepatic injury, including cases of hepatic failure, has been reported rarely in patients taking Avonex...Asymptomatic elevation of hepatic transaminases (particularly SGPT) is common with interferon therapy...In addition to those laboratory tests normally required for monitoring patients with multiple sclerosis, complete blood and differential white blood cell counts, platelet counts, and blood chemistries, including liver function tests, are recommended during AVONEX® therapy." Most neurologists were aware of the liver symptoms back in July 2007, shortly after the FDA had its AC meeting with regard to Tysabri in CD (Crohn's Disease).
Nothing has really changed... there is a rare chance of significant reversible liver problems, and a mild chance of insignificant liver enzyme elevation. This maybe a new article, but in fact to most neurologists, this is very old news.
Lastly, please note that a majority of drugs and proteins are processed through the liver, and the rest are metabolized through the kidneys. Most drugs, after they get absorbed through the intestines, go to the liver and are processed and recirculated. The drugs that are infused also have to go to the liver. So in essence, many drugs can overload the enzymes in the liver and cause inflammation such as elevated liver enzymes, etc.
All patients must weigh the risks versus benefits of Tysabri's 67% efficacy compared with the older generation MS drugs whose efficacy ranges from 29% to 34% respectively.
I am just trying to offer a more balanced view of the article so as to ease the fears of some MS patients. It is always best to discuss any MS medication with your doctor.
